​AMCS Seminar : Dynamic, spatially heterogeneous model adaptation in compressible flows

We are interested in numerical simulations of compressible fluid flows of chemically reacting mixtures. In this case, complex models are needed to precisely describe all flow regimes. If, however, the mixture is in chemical equilibrium much simpler models can be used. In many simulations the complex models are actually only needed in a small part of the computational domain while on large parts simpler models can be employed without causing significant errors. In this situation, it is desirable to decide in a reliable and automatable way which model is used in which part of the computational domain. We will present a posteriori error estimators for the modeling error, i.e., the difference between solutions to the complex and a simplified model as a tool for dynamic model adaptation in numerical simulations of compressible fluid flows.
